Color Guard works for peanuts

The Color Guard did an outstanding job representing Tahquitz at the San Diego Padres Game in PetCo Stadium Tuesday, 24 May. Cadets presented the colors during the singing of the National Anthem then sat back and shared a large bag of peanuts while enjoying the game.

Tuesday was a twofer because a second color guard performed at the Underclass Awards Ceremony in the Tahquitz theater.

The Color Guard is also performing this Friday at the THS home Baseball game against Cathedral HS.

Uniform Turn In

Parents are reminded to ensure cadets return their uniforms before the end of the school year. Despite what they might tell you...uniforms must be turned in unless the cadet is attending summer leadership camp.

YPF Teams go to the National YPF Championship

Our Male and Female YPF teams took on teams from across the country in the National High School YPF Championship on 20 & 21 May in San Diego. Teams came from all over the country to compete including New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Arkansas, and Alabama. Tahquitz was the Marine Corps JROTC representative from Southern California and put on a great showing. Although the cadets were disappointed we did not bring home a trophy, they can be proud of the fact that our unit is only two years old and for such a young unit to even qualify for Nationals is a great achievement. (Click here to see more)

JROTC Awards Night and Dinner

Our Annual Awards Night was held on May 19th. Approximately 400 cadets, families, and friends packed the theater to cheer and watch cadets receive awards. (Click here to see more)

Color Guard kicks off for Baseball

The Color Guard carried the colors in the opening for Tahquitz's baseball team CIF playoff game at home on 20 May. The Principal threw out the first pitch (clocked at 35mph!) and everyone had an exciting afternoon as our team went to a clear victory over Sultana.

Cadet Makes a Pledge

Our own cadet Nolan S. was selected by the school faculty to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at last night's meeting of the School Board. The honor rotates amongst the schools in the district and when Tahquitz's turn came up, the search went out as to who could best represent our students and reputation. We are especially proud that the honor not only went to a well deserving student, but one who is among the top cadets in the battalion.

Cadet receives top award

Daughters of the American Revolution, Estudillo Chapter, honored top cadets from local schools at their meeting today at the Unity Chapel Fellowship Hall in Hemet. Our own Battalion Commander, cadet Jasmine P. is shown on the right, along with cadets from West Valley NJROTC and San Jacinto AFJROTC. The award included a medal, ribbon, certificate, and a U.S. Savings Bond.

Mini Triathlon

Saturday 14 May, some cadets got an early start to prepare the ground for the Tahquitz HS Mini Triathlon sponsored by CSF and MCJROTC. The course started with a two mile run around the stadium track, then a five mile bicycle ride around the campus, and ended with a 200m swim in the pool.

The event raised over $2000 for Cherish Our Children and all proceeds go to help build a school in Mexico. While some cadets directed participants around the course, other cadets were competitors. In addition to winning prizes for the best times, cadets were also eligible to be in a second category for JROTC only.

It is no surprise that the top three winners were THS cadets, and so the same three won the JROTC trophies as well. First place went to cadet Timothy B. Second place was Benito G. and in third was Joshua M.

PE Department Has a Field Day

Second year cadets wrapped up their five week unit on Event Planning with a practical application of organizing a Field Meet for the PE Department on May 12th and 13th. Their planning included producing a Five Paragraph Order and conducting risk assessment of the various events.

PE classes were pitted against each other playing one teacher's class against the others. Cries could be heard that "Friestad's class is number ONE!" or "Scripps WINS AGAIN!" or "Let's beat that OTHER coach!" (Click here to see more)

Camp Pendleton Field Trip

Cadets spent their Spring Break (4 - 7 April) learning about Marine Corps occupations and exercising leadership skills. Marching ten miles a day took its toll on their feet, but spirits remained high as they toured aircraft on the flight line, practiced marksmanship and maneuver on simulators, overcame the obstacle course, lots of physical training, and much more. (Click here to see more)

Spring Carnival

Cadets ran another fun and busy booth at the carnival selling drinks and offering a game of "Stand Up the Bottle" this past Friday, 1 April. Our last carnival wasn't very profitable since the weather was cold. This time the sun was bright and the air was warm and we sold nearly our entire stock of drinks.

Rising at 5:00 am to depart school at 6:00 am, the Tahquitz Youth Physical Fitness (YPF) male and female teams competed at the Regional Meet in San Diego on 19 March. Both teams had tough competition from the other schools. The long morning drive and workout was rewarded with a special lunch stop for Nessie burgers on the way home. Congratulations to the YPF teams for qualifying for the Nationals where the competition will be even tougher.

Orienteering at Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area

Cadets wore sad faces when Kaiser High School canceled their JROTC Orienteering Meet at Prado Park this month. But luckily the Los Angeles Orienteering Club put on a meet this weekend at the Santa Fe Dam Rec Area on March 13th. Three teams took on the Yellow (4 km) and one team tackled the Intermediate (6 km) land navigation course. All four teams finished in less than two hours. The Army JROTC teams from Azusa finished ahead of us but that doesn't squash our hopes for a prize. Final scores will be released later.

Drill Meet at Fontana HS

Armed and Unarmed Drill Teams competed this past Saturday, March 12th, at the Fontana Drill Meet. 38 schools participated with drill teams, color guards, and saber teams making this one of largest Fontana meets in the past several years. To compensate for the hardwork all year long, both teams had a terrific lunch at Hometown Buffet. No doubt the manager saw his profits disappearing when the cadets attacked the buffet with excessive enthusiasm and typical Tahquitz zeal. We did not take home any trophies but considering this is the first time the armed team and the four-man unarmed team has performed in competition, they did an outstanding job. Next stop on the tour is the National Drill Meet in Torrance, CA next month.

Rancho Viejo Fun Run

Nine cadets assisted future THS students by giving encouragement and setting the example of physical excellence at the Rancho Viejo Middle School Fun Run on March 11th.

Law Enforcement Dinner

Twenty cadets served food and bussed tables at the American Legion Post 53 for their Law Enforcement Awards Dinner. For their hard work the American Legion donated $200 to Tahquitz MCJROTC. Accepting on behalf of the cadets is the Battalion Commander, cadet Jasmine P.

Tahquitz hosts their first annual Youth Physical Fitness Challenge

A Navy, Air Force, and two Marine Corps JROTC units tough it out at the Tahquitz High School Youth Physical Fitness Challenge hosted by Tahquitz MCJROTC. Cadets organized and executed a successful event that measured strength and endurance as the five male and two female teams competed in Pull Ups, Push Ups, Sit Ups, Long Jump, and a 300 yd Shuttle Run. An added fun event was the rock climbing wall and a booth where cadets could win prizes like t-shirts and water bottles for doing pull ups or push ups, and the tractor tire flip.

San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital 60th Anniversary

Five members of the Color Guard presented the colors at the 60th Anniversary celebration of San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning on March 4th. Cadets enjoyed the vehicle displays, music, food, and especially the aircraft flyby.

Pep Rally

JROTC put on a terrific show at the Pep Rally on 28 Jan, starting off with the Unarmed Drill Team commanded by cadet Minh T. followed by the ever crowd pleasing Armed Drill Team commanded by cadet Nolan S. Tahquitz Titans roared, screamed, and applauded the performances. An added attraction was the drill team's drummer, cadet Giovanny M. who will be drumming the beat at the team's next competition at Fontana High School in March.

8th graders from Rancho Viejo Middle School wrapped up their military careers week with a visit to Tahquitz's MCJROTC on Friday, 17 Sep. They observed the cadets conducting motivating PT in the football stadium and even joined them in doing a few push-ups. They watched a video of the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team, handled the Daisy Drill Rifle, and received a brief lesson on the Marine Corps Emblem; the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. While looking at the military posters in the JROTC classroom they were able to identify things they learned about during this week, things like parachutes, airplanes, and tanks.

Uniform Issue for LE1 Cadets

Now that the September 10th deadline has passed for changing classes, we will start issuing uniforms to LE1 (first year) cadets. Reminder to cadets and parents: this issue represents a large dollar value and cadets are expected to take the utmost care in maintaining and proper wearing of their uniform. Parental signature acknowledging the responsibility of repayment for lost or negligently damaged items is required before a cadet can receive his/her uniform.

Tahquitz MCJROTC Earns Naval Honor School Title

Tahquitz High School received the coveted Naval Honor School (NHS) title for school year 2009-2010 which identifies a school whose JROTC program stands in the upper 20 percent of all programs in the nation. The criteria for this award are based on many factors; a few of which were:

- Cadets attended 18 public affair events
- Cadets earned 37 academic awards and three scholarships
- Cadets performed 623 hours of community service
- 28 cadets were involved in school sports, clubs, or other school activities
- Cadets attended five major drill and athletic competitions including the Regional and National YPF Meet.

Not captured in the statistics are the facts that Tahquitz MCJROTC won six trophies at the Chaparral Sports Day competition, earned second place at the Hemet HS JROTC Basketball Tournament, served dinner to approximately 350 guests during their awards night, and flawlessly executed a military ball, and so much more; all during their first year of operation.

The MCJROTC Instructors are Lieutenant Colonel William Akana and Sergeant Major Mark Harrell. Upon receiving the list of NHS winners, LtCol Akana says "I couldn't believe it when I saw Tahquitz on the list. I doubled checked the address of the school in case it was another school named Tahquitz but there was our school address so it was definitely us."

Cadet Gabrielle B. says "I'm so excited we won this award. Since this is my last year in high school that makes it special." Cadet Jasmine P. says she thinks it's "AWSOME" and newcomer first year cadet Brian F. says he is "shocked" that the unit won the title in its first year.

LtCol Akana says much of the credit lies with "SgtMaj Harrell [who] is the primary instructor of first year cadets and last year, they were all first year cadets." When asked what he thought about the award, the SgtMaj responded in a loud and commanding voice "we aren't done yet, our work has only just begun. Next we'd like one of our cadets to earn the Legion of Valor award" which is given to the top 5 MCJROTC cadets in the nation.

With this kind of attitude and the accomplishments of their first year, the path taken by the MCJROTC program is definitely one towards success.
